Academic Curriculum

At the core of the Linked Learning approach is a challenging academic component that prepares students for success—without remediation—in community colleges and universities, as well as in apprenticeships and other postsecondary programs. Pathways offer the mathematics, science, English, social studies, and other core courses required for admissions to, and success in, the state’s public universities.

In pathways, these traditional academic courses use innovative instructional approaches. Rather than the typical teacher-centered lectures and memorization of facts, ConnectEd believes that students should be engaged in inquiry-based learning contextualized in real-world applications, and that the most effective way to teach these academic subjects is through project-based learning that is linked to a technical core. For example, in an Engineering pathway, students may learn about the Gilded Age in US History by examining the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge and how it affected rapid urbanization and industrialization, the experiences of new immigrants, and the influence of urban politics on labor and public policy.
